Gibsons - Heading For The Beach 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A seaside high street in about 1960, on the morning everybody goes down to the sand. Painted by Trevor Mitchell, and the bunting across the top is the best thing in it.

One thing worth knowing before you buy. We stock this artwork in two formats. This is the standard 1000 piece. There is also a 500 piece Extra Large edition of the same picture, with pieces roughly double the size, which finishes at the same dimensions and suits anyone who wants easier handling. Same image, different build.

What you are looking at

Bunting and Union flags strung across the road. On the left, a beach shop under a blue and white striped awning with a big yellow Kodak film sign, buckets and spades, beach balls in a net, inflatable rings and a spinning rack of comics and postcards. A red Royal Mail pillar box on the corner.

In the middle of the road a green Morris Minor convertible with the roof down and a child standing up on the back seat. Families crossing towards the sea: a boy with a football and a shrimping net, a girl in yellow with a bucket, a man carrying a striped windbreak and a woven bag. On the right, Ben's Fish and Chips in blue and white, a tea room, a pub sign with a sailing ship, and a pale blue Vespa at the kerb. A seafood stall at the end of the street with the sea behind it, and two west highland terriers on a double lead in the foreground.

What it is like to build

Build the shopfronts first. The blue and white awning on the left and the blue chip shop on the right are the two strongest colour blocks and they pin both edges.

Then the bunting, which is a run of small saturated triangles against pale sky and is the most satisfying region in the picture. Then the car, the only green. The road is the only hard field, a wide band of pale grey tarmac with little detail, and it should be left until the figures standing on it are already placed.

Why the Gibsons build matters

Gibsons have been British since 1919 and make their 1000 piece puzzles in the UK and Europe on 100% recycled board, thick enough that the pieces do not curl. Planet-friendly, tab-sealed box, no shrink wrap.

A little context

Trevor Mitchell paints crowds of ordinary people better than almost anyone in this category, which sounds like faint praise until you build one: most crowd painters make everybody look the same, and half the pleasure here is that the faces are individuals.
