Heye - Future Cities: Shroomland 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A city built under and inside enormous fly agaric mushrooms, with rope bridges strung between them and a person walking one of them. Portrait format, from Heye's Future Cities series by Gal Barkan.

What you are looking at

Half a dozen vast red-and-white spotted mushroom caps fill the upper two thirds, at different heights and angles. Under and around them, white architecture: domed and columned structures built into the stems, terraces, spires, and a dense pale city spreading out below. Small aircraft or gliders hang in the air between the caps.

Across the middle, rope bridges span the gaps, and on the nearest one a single small figure in yellow is walking, which is what gives the whole picture its scale. Below, water and a lower town in soft blue haze. Bare branches with pink blossom frame both edges of the frame, and further mushrooms recede into the distance behind.

What it is like to build

The caps are the structure and they are unmissable. Red-orange domes with white spots, each one a large curved shape, and there is no other red in the picture. Build them first and the composition is fixed.

Then the bridges, which are thin dark diagonals crossing pale ground and are among the easiest pieces to identify. The white city is the difficulty: hundreds of pale domes, columns and rooftops in near-identical cream and grey, at small scale. Sort those by how hazy they are, since the artist has faded the distance heavily, and place from the front backwards. The blossom branches at the edges are the last job.

Why Heye

Heye are German and their whole editorial position is licensing artwork other publishers would not touch. Future Cities is a proper series rather than a one-off, and Gal Barkan's work is concept art in the true sense: buildable worlds rather than decorative fantasy. Board and cut to the German standard.
