500 extra large pieces, and the picture on the box still is not the puzzle. This is Wasgij Retro Original 6, Blooming Marvellous, in the 500XL format, which is the gentlest way into the whole Wasgij idea.

Worth knowing before you buy. We stock this artwork in two formats. This is the 500 piece extra large edition, with pieces roughly double the usual size. There is also a standard 1000 piece edition of the same title. Same picture, same puzzle to solve, very different evening.

Why the XL format matters here specifically

A Wasgij is already harder than a normal puzzle, because you are building a picture you have never seen. Adding a small piece size on top of that is what makes people give up. 500 large pieces takes the fiddliness out and leaves the interesting part in, which makes this the right one to start on, and the right one for anybody whose hands or eyes would rather not fight a 1000.

How a Wasgij works

In an Original you build the scene from one character's point of view, and it appears nowhere on the packaging. Here the instruction is to puzzle what the neighbour sees, and he is the man on the side of the box in the striped shirt, mid-outrage.

What is on the box

A suburban back garden in slow-motion collapse. Two men lean on a fence in the foreground, one in a yellow and red argyle jumper seen from behind, the other holding a copy of SUPER GRO and looking appalled. Behind them: a greenhouse with someone inside it, a hammock with a man falling out of it, a treehouse, a hang glider coming down over the rooftops, a chimney sweep's brush erupting from a chimney, a man up a ladder, a woman on a floral swing seat, a pond with a fish leaving it, gnomes, an oversized snail and several loose chickens.

What it is like to build

Sort by colour family and by line, because you have no reference picture. Skin tones, lawn and hedge green, fence brown, and the block colours of the clothing. The fence across the foreground is your best feature, a strong horizontal band of vertical boards running the full width. Build the border, then the fence, then work upward.

Large-piece adult puzzles are one of the genuinely underserved corners of the market, and a large-piece Wasgij is rarer still. If somebody has been curious about the format but put off by the difficulty, this is the honest recommendation rather than the 1000.
