What you get. This is the Jumbo Special Edition, and the box contains two 1000 piece puzzles: the Wasgij itself, which is the scene Mrs Claus can see and appears nowhere on the packaging, plus a second 1000 piece puzzle. 2000 pieces of building in total.

How a Wasgij works

You do not build what you can see. You build what one character in the scene can see, worked out from logic and from the pieces themselves rather than from a reference image. Here the department store manager has unveiled his Christmas makeover and Mrs Claus, front and centre in a pink fur coat, has reacted with undisguised horror. What she is looking at is your puzzle.

What is on the box

A grand department store hall: gold coffered ceiling, chandeliers, hot air balloon decorations on chains, a towering tree with a gold bow, and cone-shaped feature trees in pink and blue. The manager in a blue suit with his arms flung wide. A reindeer with an expression of pure alarm, a nutcracker guard in a bearskin, a snowman, Santa browsing at the back, and a crowd of shoppers whose faces run from delight to horror.

What it is like to build

Sort by colour and texture, hard. With no reference for the mystery puzzle, grouping is what replaces the picture: skin tones, ceiling gold, floor, and the strong block colours of the coats. Wasgij art is heavy black outline over flat fill, so any piece carrying a line is worth several that do not.

Keep the two puzzles apart. Both are 1000 pieces, both are in the same box and both are cut the same way, so open one bag at a time. That sounds obvious right up until it is not.
